Ok then what is the reason for swithcing just curious, and the reason I am curious is real shell tends to be less expensive and sands better. That is to say you have no problems with muti layers being vissible after sanding that you can have with ablam or other laminated shell products.

That saids, real Ablam, meaning that produced by the Duke of Pearl is great stuff if the inlays is flat and there is little or no sanding causing multi layer exposures. I used it for several years. But I switched to real shell on every thing for cost and quaility control a couple years ago. High quality seletct Blue Paua shell cost me about $24 per rosette and much less for green or red abalone. Ablam select Blue Paua runs around $35-$40 per rosette.

I buy my shell from Andy DePaule and he selects and color matches for me and if I don't like a batch he will swap till I do. Plus I dont have to worry with sanding part way through a laminate layer and haveing funky patterns.
